Why is it that Black people wear slippers/house shoes in public?

PLEASE don't get offended, my fellow brothas and sistas; I'm African-American MYSELF! You can even check my Y! Answers profile and see that I'm African-American!

I just think that it is VERY ridiculous!

Why is it that Black people wear slippers/house shoes in public?
I'm white- I wear slippers in public. It's only for comfort and because I can! I don't care what people think of me. They are just jealous because they don't have the guts to do it. Besides it descreases the risk of vericose veins and foot problems.
Reply:I like how you tried to sugar coat your question.

I see all kinds of people wearing their slippers out in public. It's not just blacks, anymore. Maybe their comfortable. Maybe they're just going to the store and don't feel the need to put on street shoes.
Reply:I once wore newspapers and baggies on my feet to the Daytona 500 -- (it's a long, sad story. You can see it on my 360 page).
Reply:hmmm i saw a white woman wearing them in a thrift store the other day, i could ask her why oh you only want to know why black people do, i don't care if you are black or green it is a stupid thing to say, more ridicules then wearing slippers in public
Reply:Maybe the people that do that are trying to start a new trend. Extremely casual chic?
Reply:Well, I don't know... you will have to do a survey, I never have done that..
Reply:I've actually never noticed one group doing this more than others. I've seen African-Americans, Caucasians and Hispanics doing it.

I imagine sometimes it's just a matter of comfort. In some places it's a fashion statement. When I see someone with 3+ little kids doing it, I figure they're lucky to remember to put anything on their feet with how busy they must be.

Oh, and when you're pregnant, sometimes your feet decide to get wider on you, and they're all you have left that fit.
Reply:I don't, I have only seen this on old invalid wheelchair bound blacks.
Reply:Funny enough, you reminded me of something. Just recently, I saw a far-asian lady shopping in her pyjamas and slippers also!
Reply:For the same reason you see white people wearing slippers or house shoes when they go out in public. Color or race has nothing to do with it.

No class, no clue, and recovering from the previous night's near OD or alcohol poisoning. Very sad sacks of dung. Pathetic ugly welfare moms and trailer trash that are exibiting the symptoms of abandoment. Hopeless.
Reply:Since you, too, are of the African American persuasion, do YOU wear slippers/house shoes in public? You made a very broad generalization that, whether or not you knew it, included yourself. For future reference, never generalize. I would question where it is that you live to make you think that "Black people" wear slippers.
Reply:Maybe it's a regional thing. I've never noticed this.

The only people I usually see wearing house shoes in public are preteen girls at the mall or in junior high schools. I've never noticed this phenomenon among black people, not even when I lived in Harlem.
Reply:last time i checked it was the other way round
Reply:Disregard race, that has nothing to do with it. It can be for a variety of reasons, some people like the comfort of those shoes, everyones feet are different (and personal fashion tastes). Then again there's always the clothing trends, like those ugly Uggs or Croc shoes.
Reply:I ride the NYC subways every day and never once have I seen a black person (or a white person, for that matter) shuffling around in slippers...
Reply:Sweetie, you obviously are a very sheltered black person. People of all races wear house shoes, coats and rollers in their hair in public, for their own reasons.

I am black and do not leave home in my houseshoes and NEVER will. But that is just because of how I was raised. The next time you see a black person with house shoes on, go ask them yourself. The answer may surprise you...
Reply:I've been black my entire life and I've never noticed that tendency. Maybe you just live in a low class place, surrounded by low class people.
Reply:may be beacuase they are comfortable in it
Reply:blacks are into everything called fashion . and we tend to wear these outfit even when it's inapprpriate for the occassion. that's why the popular jamaican artiste sings about "fashion ova style."
